Mercari is Japan's biggest flea-market app, and most listings are aimed at buyers already living here. If you can read the fields the same way a local does, you can judge an item's condition, spot a reliable seller, and avoid the listings that are simply not worth the hassle. Here is how a listing actually reads.
Condition grades
Every listing carries a condition grade chosen from a fixed set. These are the ones you will see most:
- 新品、未使用 (shinpin, mishiyou) - brand new, never used.
- 未使用に近い (mishiyou ni chikai) - almost unused, opened but effectively new.
- 目立った傷や汚れなし (medatatta kizu ya yogore nashi) - no noticeable scratches or stains.
- やや傷や汚れあり (yaya kizu ya yogore ari) - some scratches or stains.
- 傷や汚れあり (kizu ya yogore ari) - visible wear.
- 全体的に状態が悪い (zentaiteki ni joutai ga warui) - poor overall condition.
Treat the grade as the seller's opinion, not a fact. Photos and the description text override it. A grade of 目立った傷や汚れなし with a description mentioning small marks tells you more than the label alone.
Seller signals
Tap the seller's name to see their rating. It shows counts of 良い (good), 普通 (neutral), and 悪い (bad) reviews. A seller with hundreds of 良い and no 悪い is safe. Also check 本人確認 (identity verified), how recently they were active, and whether their other listings look like a real person clearing out belongings versus a bulk reseller. Read a few of their recent reviews for words like 発送が早い (fast shipping) or 梱包が丁寧 (careful packaging).
Shipping fields
Look at 配送料の負担: 送料込み means the seller pays shipping (best for you), 着払い means you pay on delivery. The 配送の方法 field names the carrier method: らくらくメルカリ便 and ゆうゆうメルカリ便 are anonymous, tracked, and reliable. 発送元の地域 shows the origin prefecture and 発送までの日数 estimates handling time (1-2 days, 2-3 days, etc.).
Common phrases
- 即購入OK - buy immediately, no need to comment first.
- コメント必須 - you must comment before buying.
- 専用 (senyou) - reserved for a specific buyer; do not buy a listing marked this way.
- 値下げ不可 - no price reductions. お気持ち程度なら - a token discount is possible.
- ペット・喫煙者なし - no pets, non-smoking household.
Negotiation culture
Polite haggling is normal. Buyers comment asking for a small discount, often a few hundred yen, and sellers frequently adjust the price for you to purchase. Lowball offers are considered rude and get ignored. If a listing says 値下げ不可, skip the negotiation entirely.
Red flags
Be cautious with brand-name items priced far below market (counterfeit risk), stock-photo-only listings with no real photos, vague descriptions, brand-new accounts with zero reviews, or requests to move the deal off Mercari. For anything expensive, ask for extra photos in the comments before committing.
Buying it from outside Japan
Mercari sells only to buyers with a Japanese address and payment method, and some sellers explicitly avoid transfers or refuse anonymous shipping. Certain items are also hard to move abroad. If you are overseas, the practical route is a proxy service.
A proxy buys the item on your behalf, receives it at their Japanese warehouse, then forwards it to you internationally. You pay the item price, a proxy fee, domestic shipping, and international shipping. Before you commit, estimate the full landed cost with our calculator so the total does not surprise you, and if you are choosing a service, compare the options in Buyee vs Zenmarket vs Neokyo vs Remambo.
Once you can read a listing confidently, the same instincts carry over elsewhere. Auction-style listings work differently, so see how to read Yahoo Auctions next.
