Rakuten Ichiba (楽天市場) is not a single store. It is a marketplace where thousands of independent shops sell under one roof, each with its own inventory, pricing, and shipping rules. That structure is the single most important thing to understand before you try to buy from abroad: there is no central Rakuten warehouse that packs your order and ships it overseas. Each shop decides how it handles delivery, and the large majority ship only within Japan.
Because of this, buying from Ichiba from outside Japan usually means routing your order through a proxy service that receives the package at a Japanese address, then forwards it to you. The proxy places the order with the shop as a domestic customer, so the shop never has to deal with an international address at all.
How to tell if a shop ships domestically only
Most Ichiba shops do not advertise international shipping, and if a listing is silent on the topic, assume it is domestic only. A few signals to check on the product and shop pages:
- 送料 (shipping): shipping tables almost always list Japanese prefectures only. If the only options are 都道府県 regions, there is no overseas path.
- 発送目安 (dispatch estimate): tells you how soon the shop ships after payment, in business days. Useful for planning consolidation, but it refers to domestic dispatch.
- 在庫 (stock): look for 在庫あり (in stock) versus 在庫なし or 取り寄せ (back-order). Back-ordered items can stall a consolidated shipment.
- 海外発送 / 国際配送: the phrases a shop would use if it did ship abroad. Their absence is the norm.
Rakuten Global Market vs Ichiba
Rakuten has at times operated an English-facing storefront aimed at overseas buyers, separate from the Japanese Ichiba you reach at rakuten.co.jp. The two are not interchangeable: the English catalog is far smaller, and many items you find on Ichiba simply are not offered through any international-facing channel. If a product exists on Ichiba but nowhere else, a proxy is generally the only route.
Rakuten points and proxies
Ichiba runs a large points program (楽天ポイント), and points accrue to the account that places the order. When a proxy buys on your behalf, any points earned belong to the proxy's account, not yours, and you should not expect them to be passed on. Treat points as a domestic-shopper perk that does not translate to proxy buying. Focus instead on the item price plus the proxy's fees and forwarding cost.
Consolidation across shops
Because each shop ships separately, a proxy is especially useful when you want items from several different Ichiba shops. The proxy receives each parcel at its Japanese warehouse, then combines them into one international shipment. This is where most of the savings come from, since one heavier box is usually cheaper than many small ones. Watch dispatch estimates and stock status per shop, since the slowest item sets the pace for the whole consolidation.

Reading a Rakuten product page
Product pages vary by shop, but a few fields are worth locating every time: 在庫 for availability, 発送目安 for how quickly the shop dispatches, and the 送料無料 label, which means free shipping but almost always only under conditions such as a minimum spend or specific prefectures. Free domestic shipping does not extend to your country; it only gets the parcel to the proxy for free. Also check for per-item quantity limits and whether the price shown already includes tax (税込 vs 税抜).
Categories Rakuten is good for
Ichiba's breadth is strongest in everyday Japanese consumer goods: food and pantry items, household and kitchen goods, stationery and hobby supplies, cosmetics and skincare, and small home electronics and accessories. It is a good hunting ground when you want mainstream domestic products rather than collector or boutique items, which tend to concentrate on other platforms.
